As every married couple will tell you: marriage is work. And that holds true for celebrities just as it does for the rest of us — maybe even more so. Catherine Zeta-Jones and her husband of 13 years Michael Douglas are the latest celebrity couple to go through some of the “bad times” mentioned in traditional marriage vows. People magazine reported early Wednesday morning that the couple is on a bit of a hiatus.

A friend of the couple tells People that the difficulties they’ve faced — including Douglas’ cancer battle and Zeta-Jones’ ongoing struggle with Bipolar II disorder — are the reasons for the split. “The stress has taken a toll on their marriage,” the source says.

The Huffington Post was able to confirm the news, as a rep for Zeta-Jones says, “Catherine and Michael are taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage. There will be no further comment.”

According to People‘s sources, no official steps towards a legal separation or divorce have been made.
