Chloë Grace Moretz: I’m sure you’ve heard her name before or even seen her on the big screen, as she’s been acting for most of her life. But how much do you really know about the 24-year-old actress? Let’s take a look into her life and see how she has already accomplished so much in her fairly young acting career. 

So, who is Chloë Grace Moretz?

Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Chloë Grace Moretz is one of five children to parents McCoy Moretz and Teri Duke. Growing up, Chloë Grace Moretz’s older brother Trevor served as her acting coach, according to a 2010 TIME article. Trevor’s affinity for acting brought part of the family to New York City in 2002 when he was accepted to the Professional Performing Arts School. When speaking to TIME about how Trevor helps her prepare for roles, Chloë Grace Moretz said “The way I like to put it is, it’s like a painting. “I draw the outline, and he fills it in and makes it perfect.”

Nowadays, Chloë Grace Moretz stands up for social justice, working to increase her fans’ and followers’ awareness of the issues plaguing the world around them. Chloë endorsed Democratic Candidate Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Presidential election, and her Twitter bio still contains the politician’s quote “To all the little girls watching… never doubt that you are valuable and powerful & deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world.” 

Chloë Grace Moretz has shared information about stopping gun violence and how to support the Black Lives Matter movement. Chloë Grace Moretz has received recognition and numerous awards for her work outside of Hollywood. In 2012, the actress won the Women in Film Crystal + Lucy Award for Face of the Future. In 2013, Chloë won the Elle Style Award for Next Future Icon. In 2014, TIME listed Chloë Grace Moretz as one of their picks for top 25 most influential teens of the year. 

How did Chloë Grace Moretz start in Hollywood?

Chloë Grace Moretz first fell in love with acting when she would help her brother Trevor run lines during his time at the Professional Performing Arts School. Chloë’s first role was as Violet in the CBS drama series The Guardian in 2004. 

The first character Chloë Grace Moretz played on the big screen was Chelsea Lutz in the film The Amityville Horror, directed by Andrew Douglas. The 2005 film is a remake of the 1979 movie of the same name, both based on the book The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson. Chloë Grace Moretz’s character is a young girl whose family moves into a new house where a murder took place a year before.

Chloë Grace Moretz then went on to star in Hollywood movies including Wicked Little Things, (500) Days of Summer, and The Eye. When Chloë was only 13 years old, TIME author Mary Pols wrote that “Children who are capable of the performances Chloë gives are flummoxing.”

Chloë Grace Moretz movies: Kick-Ass (2010) & Kick-Ass 2 (2013)

One of Chloë Grace Moretz’s most iconic roles has been her acting as Hit-Girl from the 2010 film Kick-Ass and its 2013 sequel. The comic book movies, directed by Matthew Vaughn and Jeff Wadlow, respectively, are based on Marvel’s Kick-Ass comic books. Chloë Grace Moretz stars alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Nicolas Cage, Jim Carrey, and Evan Peters, playing a young vigilante who in the end teams up with the main hero, Kick-Ass. 

In 2010, the New York Times reported that Chloë Grace Moretz went through months of training in gymnastics, body conditioning, and weapons safety to prepare for her role as Hit-Girl. In 2011, Chloë Grace Moretz won the Empire’s Best Newcomer Award for her work in Kick-Ass. She took home a slew of MTV Movie & TV Awards for both films, including Biggest Teen Bad Kicking Ass for Kick-Ass 2

Chloë Grace Moretz movies: Hugo (2011)

Chloë Grace Moretz starred in the 2011 film Hugo, which was directed by Martin Scorsese. Based on the 2007 book The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick, the story was adapted for the screen by John Logan

In the film, Chloë Grace Moretz stars alongside Asa Butterfield, Sacha Baron Cohen, Ben Kingsley, and Jude Law. The adventure movie takes place in Paris in the 1930s and follows Hugo Cabret (Asa Butterfield) as he tries to fix a broken automation that he had started working on with his father before he passed away. Hugo meets Chloë Grace Moretz’s character Isabelle and the two become friends, trying to solve the mystery of automation.

Hugo won multiple Academy Awards in 2012, including the title of Best Cinematography. It also received the 2012 Art Directors Guild award for Period Film and the 2011 Las Vegas Film Critics Society award for Best Youth in Film.

Chloë Grace Moretz won a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Movie Star Under 25 and a Young Artist Award for Best Leading Young Actress in a Feature Film for her work in Hugo.

Chloë Grace Moretz movies: Carrie (2013)

Chloë Grace Moretz played the leading role in the 2013 film Carrie. The movie, directed by Kimberly Peirce, is a remake of the 1976 film of the same name. Both are based on Stephen King’s 1974 horror novel, Carrie. Chloë stars alongside Julianne Moore, Judy Greer, and Gabriella Wilde in this supernatural film. 

The film centers around Carrie— a sheltered, shy outcast who has telekinetic powers and uses them for revenge on those who tease her at school. In an interview with ABC News, Chloë Grace Moretz said that she utilized method acting in this role in order to accentuate the darkness her character holds:

“I think because I was in so much love with Carrie as a main character, I wanted to put the audience inside her shoes, pretty much how the novel is told. So very much throughout the entire movie, you are with Carrie.”

In 2014, Carrie won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Horror Movie. Chloë Grace Moretz took home a Saturn Award that year for Best Young Actor/ Actress for her work in the hit Hollywood horror movie.

Chloë Grace Moretz movies: If I Stay (2014) 

In 2014, Chloë Grace Moretz starred in the teen drama If I Stay, playing the main character Mia Hall. Chloë stars alongside Jamie Blackley, Mireille Enos, and Joshua Leonard in this film directed by R. J. Cutler. The movie is based on a 2009 novel of the same name by Gayle Forman.

After a near-death car accident, teen cellist Mia has an out-of-body experience that allows her spiritual self to see what is happening to her physical self. As she is about to undergo surgery, she sees all that she will be leaving behind should she not make it off the operating table. 

In a 2014 interview with Collider, Chloë Grace Moretz said that she spent seven months training with a cello for two hours a day. While she didn’t fully learn the intricacies of playing the instrument, she said that traveling with the cello taught her the emotionality and passion that comes with being a cellist. 

If I Stay won Choice Movie: Drama at the 2015 Teen Choice Awards. That same year, Chloë Grace Moretz took home the people’s choice award for Favorite Dramatic Movie Actress and the Teen Choice Award for Choice Movie Actress: Drama.

Chloë Grace Moretz movies: Neighbors 2 (2016)

In 2016, Chloë Grace Moretz starred in the comedy Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. The star-studded film, directed by Nicholas Stoller, also features Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, Rose Byrne, Dave Franco, Lisa Kudrow, Selena Gomez, and Beanie Feldstein

Chloë Grace Moretz plays Shelby Robek, the head of a sorority house next to the home that Mac (Seth Rogen) and Kelly Radner (Rose Byrne) are trying to sell. The Radners run into a problem with Shelby when she doesn’t agree to stop partying in order to ensure that the family’s home is sold. This film serves as the sequel to Neighbors (2014), which has a similar plot. In the first movie, the Radners take issue with the frat house next door, also know for excessive partying. 

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising was nominated for a number of awards in comedic categories, with Chloë Grace Moretz taking home the Teen Choice Awards for Choice Movie Actress: Comedy. With Chloë’s tendency to play dramatic, dark characters, it’s refreshing to see her in a comedic, light-hearted role!

Chloë Grace Moretz movies: The Addams Family (2019)

Chloë Grace Moretz voiced Wednesday Addams for the 2019 animated comedy The Addams Family. The film also stars the voices of Finn Wolfhard, Snoop Dogg, Nick Kroll, Bette Midler, and Allison Janney. The movie follows the Addams family as they try to find their place in the world around them.

Chloë Grace Moretz movies: Shadow in the Cloud (2020)

In 2020, Chloë Grace Moretz starred in the action-horror movie Shadow in the Cloud. Other stars in this film include Nick Robinson and Callan Mulvey. The movie was directed by Roseanne Liang and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2020.

Shadow in the Cloud takes place in 1943 during World War II. In the film, Chloë Grace Moretz plays Flight Officer Maude Garrett who finds herself in a dangerous situation while traveling from Auckland, New Zealand to Samoa with top-secret documents.

Chloë Grace Moretz plays Kayla, a young woman who cons her way into a job at a fancy New York City hotel. While trying to plan a celebrity couple’s wedding, Kayla teams up with Tom the cat to catch Jerry the mouse in order to ensure that he stays out of trouble and the event runs smoothly. Kayla allows Chloë Grace Moretz to show off her more fun and comical side, as the character is rather unpredictable and nothing like her other serious roles. 

In an interview with Collider, Chloë Grace Moretz discussed acting while having to leave space for animated characters in the shot. She called the experience both fun and scary.

While we mostly know Chloë Grace Moretz for her roles in movies, she has also had multiple acting credits for television. Chloë has done a number of voice roles for Disney cartoons such as The Emperor’s New School, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and My Friends Tigger & Pooh. Chloë Grace Moretz is set to star in the upcoming science fiction television series Peripheral as the main character, Flynn Fisher. According to Variety, the Amazon series will center on Flynne, “a woman trying to hold together the pieces of her broken family in a forgotten corner on tomorrow’s America.” The series is based on the 2014 book Peripheral by William Gibson and its release date has not yet been announced.

The science-fiction thriller, written and directed by Mattson Tomlin, is expected to be released on Hulu later this year, as reported by Deadline.
