Demi Lovato recalls ‘really beautiful’ moment she came out as sexually fluid to her parents

Demi Lovato has opened up about the “really beautiful” moment she revealed to her parents that she identifies as sexually fluid.

The 27-year-old singer is doing the promo rounds ahead of singing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl on Sunday (February 2, 2020), and sat down with Andy Cohen on his SiriusXM show Radio Andy on Thursday to reflect on getting to where she is in her life.

Among the topics discussed Demi, who went public with her sexuality status in an interview with InStyle magazine in 2018, reflected on telling her mum and dad the year before.

“I’m still figuring it out,” Demi shared. “I didn’t officially tell my parents that I saw myself ending up possibly with a woman until 2017. It was actually emotional, but really beautiful. After everything was done, I was like shaking and crying. I just felt overwhelmed. I have such incredible parents. They were so supportive.”

Demi added that while her dad wasn’t surprised by her revelation, she was most nervous about telling her mom.

“My mom was the one that I was super nervous about,” she recalled. “But she was like, ‘I just want you to be happy.’ And that was so beautiful and amazing. I’m so grateful.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Demi opened up about singing her new track Anyone at the Grammy Awards in what was her first live performance in two years following her drug overdose. She had to restart the performance after growing emotional, and explained: “I think I was just overwhelmed and overtaken by emotion. When I performed the song, I looked at the front row and I saw my mom and my two sisters, and I think having… seeing them in the front row just overwhelmed me with emotion.

“Also, it was very much in my head, like, this is the first time you’re on stage in a year and a half… so I had that voice in my head. And then, also, I put myself back in that hospital bed listening to that song, on little speakers in the ICU. I put myself back in that position and I was just overwhelmed.”
