Dustin Lance Black Fires Back At Sam Smith For His Oscar Blunder

Screenwriter Dustin Lance Black has warned Sam Smith to stop texting his athlete fiance Tom Daley.

Dustin, who has been engaged to the Olympic diver since last year (15), took to Twitter.com to point out to the Stay With Me singer that he was not the first openly gay person to win an Oscar on Sunday (28Feb16), because Dustin had already scored a trophy for Milk in 2009.

He also blasted Sam for another issue, writing, “Hey @SamSmithWorld, if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiance.”

Dustin then shared a link to footage of him winning the Best Original Screenplay prize to dispute Sam’s first openly gay claim in his acceptance speech for Best Original Song.

In his speech, Sam said, “I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen that said that no openly gay man had ever owned an Oscar and if this is the case, even if it isn’t the case, I wanna dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world. I stand here tonight as a proud gay man and I hope we can all stand together as equals one day.”

He later conceded to U.K. show Good Morning Britain that he was mistaken, saying at the Vanity Fair after party, “I think I’m the secondly openly gay person to win it.”

He beat off competition from singers including Lady Gaga and The Weeknd to scoop the Oscar for Writing’s on the Wall from James Bond film Spectre.

Dustin, 41, has been dating Tom, 21, since 2013. They announced their engagement in Britain’s The Times newspaper in October (15).
