Giuliana Rancic of E! News has been very open about her breast cancer since her diagnosis three months ago. On October 17th, she told Ann Curry on the Today show she found out she was in the early stages of the disease when a doctor she was consulting about in vitro fertilization recommended she get a mammogram (because the hormones she would be taking would accelerate cancer growth). She described what it was like to receive the bad news, saying, “It was just a kick in the stomach. That was the hardest day … (the emotions are) what you expect but so much more. It was incredible instant sobbing, and it was like the world just crashed down around me. I couldn’t believe it, 36 years old, no family history.” But she remained insistent on getting pregnant, adding “I’m not going to give up. I want that baby, and that baby will have saved my life.” Then yesterday, Giuliana and her husband Bill returned to the Today show and informed everyone she planned to have a double mastectomy and then an immediate reconstruction later this month. On the plans, Giuliana said she was confident in her decision and explained, “I’ll be able to say that I survived something major and it’s made me stronger. I will be a better woman for it.”
Giuliana is also on the cover of this week’s People, and reveals that even though there are some days when the situation shocks her, she tries to spend the majority of her time being optimistic by encouraging women to get mammograms early and often. Her surgery is scheduled for December 13th, and her outlook seems upbeat as the day approaches, as evidenced by her telling the magazine, “My breasts have never defined me — and now they never will… I think scars tell such an incredibly story. I’ll always look at them and think, ‘Wow, I made it through that.'”
