Highlights from the 74th Cannes Film Festival

Hey Hollywooders! Today we’re sharing some of our favorite moments from the 74th Cannes Film Festival. The prestigious festival ran July 6- July 17 and celebrated some of the biggest actors and filmmakers from around the world!

This marked the first Cannes Film Festival since 2019, as the 2020 festival was canceled due to the pandemic.

Cannes Film Festival 2021: notable winners 

The Feature Film Jury is responsible for choosing the award winners of the Cannes Film Festival. This year’s jury was headed by filmmaker Spike Lee and also included actors Mélanie Laurent, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Tahar Rahim, and Song Kang-ho, directors Mati Diop, Jessica Hausner, and Kleber Mendonça Filho, and musical artist Mylène Farmer. Spike Lee is the first Black person in Cannes Film Festival history to lead the jury, as reported by NBC News

This year’s winner of the Palme d’Or (the festival’s highest award) was Titane, directed by Julia Ducournau. The French-Belgian horror/thriller film stars Agathe Rousselle, Vincent Lindon, and Garance Marillier. According to Deadline, Julia Ducournau is only the second female director to win the Palme d’Or.

Spike Lee said that Titane “…struck [him] as extraordinary, ingenious with a flash of madness.”

Ghahreman (A Hero) and Hytti NRO 6 (Compartment No. 6) tied for the festival’s Grand Prix award. This is the second-most distinguished prize that feature films can win at the Cannes Film Festival. Ghahreman is an Iranian drama/ thriller that was directed and written by Asghar Farhadi. Hytti NRO 6 is also a drama that was directed by Juho Kuosmanen.

French director Leos Carax took home the award for Best Director for his work on Annette starring Adam Driver, while the award for best screenplay went to Drive My Car written by Ryusuke Hamaguchi and Takamasa Oe.

Renate Reinsive won the award for Best Actress and Caleb Landry Jones for Best Actor for their work in Verdens Verste Menneske (The Worst Person in the World) and Nitram, respectively.

Tian Xia Wu Ya (All The Crows in the World) directed by Tang Yi won the Palme d’Or for short films, and Razzhimaya Kulaki (Unclenching the Fists) directed by Kira Kovalenko won the Un Certain Regard (“from another angle”) Prize.

The award for Caméra d’Or went to Murina, a drama directed by Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović. According to the Cannes Film Festival, the Caméra d’Or “is given to the best first film from the Official Selection, La Semaine de la Critique and the Directors’ Fortnight.”

Cannes Film Festival 2021: red carpet looks

In addition to the wonderful films, the Cannes Film Festival brought stunning looks from our favorite movie stars and pop culture icons.

Model Bella Hadid attended the Tre Piani (Three Floors) premiere on July 11. Bella looked stunning as always, wearing a Schiaparelli black dress and ruby rings and earrings with her hair in a top knot. The star of the outfit, however, was a gilded brass necklace with rhinestones made to look like lungs.

Fans loved Timothée’s outfit and quickly circulated photos on social media.

Timothée Chalamet posed with his co-star Tilda Swinton at The French Dispatch premiere. Tilda donned a bold and colorful outfit by designer Haider Ackermann.

Leader of the 74th Cannes Film Festival Jury Spike Lee excited in multiple vibrant outfits from Louis Vuitton throughout the festival’s events.

One of Spike Lee’s suits looked like a gorgeous, vivid painting.

Oscar-winning actress Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk) wowed in an elegant black and white Schiaparelli gown while attending the amfAR Gala at the festival.

Winner of the Honorary Palme d’Or, director, actor, and producer Jodie Foster (The Silence of the Lambs, Taxi Driver) looked refined in a pearl Givenchy floor-length gown fitted with silver embellishments.

Cannes Film Festival 2021: notable movie screenings for upcoming releases

The French Dispatch stars Timothée Chalamet, Elisabeth Moss, Bill Murray, Saoirse Ronan, and Tilda Swinton, among many other notable actors. Directed by Wes Anderson, the film focuses on three different storylines and, according to IndieWire, is described as “a love letter to journalists set at an outpost of an American newspaper in Paris.”

The New York Times reported that following its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on July 12, The French Dispatch received a nine-minute-long standing ovation. The comedy-drama also made The Hollywood Reporter’s list of critics’ favorite Cannes Festival films.

Stillwater is a crime drama directed by Tom McCarthy that stars Matt Damon and Abigail Breslin. The film was screened in the Cannes Film Festival’s Out of Competition category. Stillwater follows Matt Damon’s character as he tries to clear his daughter’s name after she has been wrongfully arrested on murder charges.

According to Variety, Matt Damon was “moved to tears” during the standing ovation Stillwater received after its premiere on July 8.

The Velvet Underground is a documentary film about a rock band of the same name, directed by Todd Haynes. NPR called the film “richly immersive” and named it one of the seven films not to miss from the Cannes Film Festival.

Feathers won the Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival’s Critics’ Week. According to Variety, the film directed and written by John Ruane is set in modern-day Egypt and focuses on a mother of three whose idealist husband is unexpectedly turned into a chicken by a magician.
