If These Celebs Can Take Social Media Breaks, So Can You

Do you ever feel like social media becomes too overwhelming and can’t seem to really disconnect? Your favorite celebs are going through the same thing. Social media sometimes becomes too much and you need to take a step back and take a break for your mental health.

It might seem hard, but disconnecting is sometimes exactly what we need. Here are some of your favorite celebrities who have taken a break from social media to put their mental health first.

Britney Spears is taking a break from Instagram

Pop star, Britney Spears, known for all her fun and honest Instagram posts and dancing videos, has seemingly deactivated her account. When you go to search her name, her account and none of her posts are visible. This comes just days after announcing her engagement to long time boyfriend, Sam Asghari.

Don’t worry she didn’t delete her entire account, she is simply taking a break from the app. After the internet went into a frenzy, Britney must have seen it and took to Twitter to clarify, saying she’s  “taking a little break from social media to celebrate my engagement.”

Selena Gomez has been vocal about prioritizing her mental health

Selena Gomez has been sharing her perspective on social media, opening up about how it impacts her mental health. She has been an advocate for mental health over the years even using her 2016 AMA’s acceptance speech to shed light on the importance of speaking up when you need help.

“I don’t want to see your bodies on Instagram. I want to see what’s in here (pointing to her heart). I’m not trying to get validation nor do I need it anymore… If you are broken, you don’t have to stay broken,” says Selena Gomez at the 2016 AMAs.

With more 262 million Instagram followers, Selena like anyone has felt the pressure and criticism that come along with it. In 2017, she even decided to hand over the password to her account to her assistant so the app is no longer on her phone and has stuck with it over the years.

She told Elle last month, “I don’t have it on my phone, so there’s no temptation. I suddenly had to learn how to be with myself. That was annoying because, in the past, I could spend hours looking at other people’s lives. I would find myself down nearly two years in someone’s feed, and then I’d realize, ‘I don’t even know this person!’”

Outer Banks star Chase Stokes takes a break from social media

Chase Stokes, one of the lead actors in Netflix’s Outer Banks, announced towards the end of August that he was taking a break from social media. This all comes a few weeks after the release of Season 2 of the hit show.

He took to his Instagram stories to share that he was taking some time away from social media and that his management would be taking over for him.

In one of his stories Chase wrote, “I have to take care of my brain. Mental health is a journey of a lifetime.”

Chase did make a quick appearance last week on his account as he had the privilege of attending the Venice Film Festival, a moment he wanted to share with fans.

Bindi Irwin puts herself and new family first in social media break

Animal lover and conservationist Bindi Irwin felt the pressure of social media back in June and decided to take a month away. She and husband Chandler welcomed a baby girl, Grace Warrior, back in May and needed time away from social media to focus on her family and herself.

In a since deleted post, Bindi wrote, “Hi guys, Just a note to say thank you for your support. I’m taking a break from social media and most of my work in the public eye for a month to be with my beautiful daughter and my wonderful family.”

Chrissy Teigen pushed pause on Twitter after it ‘no longer serves’ her

Model, cook book star, actress Chrissy Teigen said back in March that she was leaving Twitter for good after it “no longer serves” her.

In a thread of posts on Twitter, Chrissy explains why she was taking a step back from the social media app, saying “This no longer serves me as positively as it serves me negatively, and I think that’s the right time to call something.”

Chrissy goes on to say, “I encourage you to know and never forget that your words matter.”

While her break only lasted a few weeks, her message still showcases the importance of taking yourself out of a negative situation. She also took a break after her miscarriage.

All of these celebrities taking time away from social media to prioritize their mental health shows us that we too can take some time away. It might seem hard, but start with baby steps. Delete the app off of your phone for a day, turn off notifications, or try to notice how you feel when you aren’t checking an app. Just remember to do what is best for you.
