Jennifer Aniston overwhelmed by Icon gong at People’s Choice Awards

Jennifer Aniston became only the second person to score the People’s Choice Awards Icon honor on Sunday night (November 20, 2019), and credited Friends for all her success in a heartfelt speech.

The actress picked up the trophy Melissa McCarthy claimed in 2018 and took to the stage in Santa Monica, California to accept the gong, insisting she was only an “icon” because she once starred in an iconic show.

“If I have any claim to this word icon, it was only because I was able to be on an iconic show with an iconic cast and an iconic haircut,” she joked. “I mean, Friends was truly the gift of a lifetime and I would not be standing up here without that fantastic show and that fantastic cast. It’s paved the way for everything I’ve had the chance to do since.”

Aniston’s Murder Mystery co-star Adam Sandler welcomed his pal to the stage, calling her “an incredibly caring role model with the biggest heart”, and adding, “I truly love this girl and love making movies with her and hope we can do a lot more.”

The pair’s Netflix movie was also a big winner, picking up the Comedy Movie of 2019 prize.
