Joaquin Phoenix named PETA’s Person of the Year

Joaquin Phoenix is set to be honored by bosses at Peta (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) for his commitment to animal rights.

The Joker star, who has been a longtime supporter of the organization, has been named their 2019 Person of the Year. A vegan since the age of three, Joaquin recently appeared on PETA’s We Are All Animals billboards to promote legislation that will ban traveling wild-animal circuses. He also executive produced The Animal People, a documentary about animal rights activists.

“Joaquin Phoenix never misses an opportunity to turn the spotlight away from himself and onto animals’ plight and to set a great example of walking the vegan walk,” PETA president Ingrid Newkirk said in a statement.

Previous recipients of the accolade include Oprah Winfrey, Anjelica Huston, Olivia Munn, Eva Mendes and Alicia Silverstone.
