Wouldn’t it be better to be laughing with Joaquin Phoenix than at him?
Like most people, I was scratching my head at his decision to quit acting and become a rapper — and it got even weirder when his pal and brother-in-law Casey Affleck decided to make a documentary, chronicling Phoenix’s new music career.
But now it looks like the boys just might be messing around with us, you know, because they can. According to EW, Phoenix told an unnamed source, “It’s a put-on. I’m going to pretend to have a meltdown and change careers, and Casey is going to film it.”
This is all starting to make sense, especially after Phoenix’s “debut” performance in Vegas last week, in which the former actor was seen falling off stage and slurring his way through a rap tune.
But Phoenix’s spokesperson insists the actor’s rap plans are genuine — and he really has retired from movies to focus on a music career. She tells MTV News, “He intends on exploring his musical interests, despite speculative, negative or positive reactions.”
Uh-huh, sure he is [wink, wink, nudge, nudge].
