Singer Rebecca Black has tweeted an uplifting message aimed at her younger self, admitting her viral hit Friday almost ruined her life.

The 22-year-old star became an Internet sensation for all the wrong reasons in 2011 with the release of her YouTube music video for the song. And not only did the promo become the butt of many jokes, but Rebecca was bullied for writing what some critics termed “the worst song ever”.

Nearly a decade on, Rebecca is reflecting on the painful ordeal.

“9 years ago today a music video for a song called ‘Friday’ was uploaded to the internet,” she wrote on Tuesday (February 11, 2020). “Above all things, I just wish I could go back and talk to my 13-year-old self who was terribly ashamed of herself and afraid of the world.”

Rebecca moved on to reveal peers threw food at her and her friends at school, and when she became an adult, music producers flat out refused to work with her over the Friday fallout, but despite everything, she managed to maintain her dignity.

“I’m trying to remind myself more and more that every day is a new opportunity to shift your reality and lift your spirit,” she noted. “You are not defined by any one choice or thing. Time heals and nothing is finite. It’s a process that’s never too late to begin.
