Ricky Martin Shows Off Twin Boys, Defends Surrogate Mom

Credit: Vanity FairFor years Ricky Martin kept his personal life quiet, but since revealing that he’s gay in 2010, he’s been very open about his life. Now his adorable 3-year-old twins, Matteo and Valentino, are joining their dad in the spotlight with a Spanish Vanity Fair cover shoot. Generally, Martin is a sweet as he is good looking, but in the accompanying interview the 40-year-old pop star stands up against people who’ve criticized his lifestyle.

Martin had his boys via a procedure known as “gestational surrogacy,” but he says he rejects the term “surrogate.” “I [did] not rent a womb,” he says. “This expression is used by fundamentalist conservatives.” Martin adds, “I would give my life to the woman who helped me bring my children into the world.”

Martin is raising his sons with Carlos González Abella, his partner of four years. When asked if a wedding might be in their future, he says, “If they touch [the same-sex marriage law], now as a Spanish citizen, I would stand up and unite with my community.”

This month Martin will make his Broadway debut in the revival of Evita, and he tells The Advocate that fighting for the causes he believes in has influenced his performance. In addition to advocating for gay rights, he founded the Ricky Martin Foundation in an effort to stop human trafficking. “The man I’m portraying is all about the people and working for human rights,” he explains. “And since I came out, I’ve been verbal about the importance of equality and what needs to be said. That’s what Che is about too. That is going to be my inspiration, my motivation every night.”
