Rita Ora and Sam Smith have saved the 2020 Big Weekend festival by agreeing to be part of a virtual event later this month (May 2020).

Radio 1 bosses were forced to cancel the event, set for Dundee, Scotland from May 22 to 24, due to the coronavirus crisis, but now they have announced plans for an online alternative, which will feature performances from artists’ homes and archive sets.

Biffy Clyro and Anne-Marie will also be joining Smith and Ora for the live-streamed festival.

“As much as we’d love to be performing live on stage, this will be a whole new experience for us and we cannot wait,” a band statement from Biffy Clyro reads, while Ora adds, “I’m so excited that Radio 1’s Big Weekend is happening this year, even though it’ll be from my living room.”

The Big Weekend was the first of a string of British summer festivals claimed by the coronavirus – Glastonbury, TRNSMT and Latitude have also been canceled or postponed as a result of the pandemic.
