Swiss Authorities Drop Investigation into Roman Polanski Rape Allegation

Prosecutors in Switzerland have dropped an investigation into the allegation Roman Polanski raped German actress Renate Langer in the 1970s.

Langer, 61, filed a report with Swiss police in September (17), claiming the Rosemary’s Baby moviemaker raped her at a house in Gstaad in 1972, when she was 15.

Langer didn’t tell anyone about the incident for years and didn’t report it to the police until September, and prosecutors in Bern declared late Wednesday (08Nov17) that the time limit for filing charges has expired, so the allegation cannot be pursued. Under Swiss law in 1972, an alleged victim has a maximum of 15 years to come forward.

Polanski’s lawyer, Herve Temime, said in an email to The Associated Press that he “takes note” of their decision and added that the allegations were “contested by Mr. Polanski and unfounded.”

In her report, Langer said she went to Polanski’s home because he was interested in casting her in a movie, and he raped her in the bathroom. After he apologized and cast in a small role in his movie Che? he allegedly raped once again in a bedroom she was renting in Rome, Italy for the production.

Langer was the fourth woman to publicly accuse the 84-year-old director of assaulting her when she was a teenager.

A woman only identified as Robin claimed in a Californian press conference in August that she was sexually assaulted in 1973 when she was 16 years old, while British actress Charlotte Lewis also accused Polanski in 2010 of abusing her sexually when she was 16.

In 1977, Polanski pleaded guilty to unlawful sex with Samantha Geimer when she was 13, but he fled the U.S. on the eve of his sentencing and has been living in exile from America ever since.

Both Polanski and Geimer have asked a judge to close the case against him over the years, but the judge declined to drop it again in August.

On Tuesday, Matan Uziel, founder of new website imetpolanski.com, told The Sun that five other women have submitted stories about sex abuse against Polanski to the site.
