The moment we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived: Kate Middleton has given birth to the royal baby. On Monday, July 22, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcomed a healthy baby boy. No news yet on what the new prince will be named.

According to The Guardian, Kensington Palace issued the following statement:

“Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 4.24pm. The baby weighs 8lbs 6oz. The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth. The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well and will remain in hospital overnight.”

News broke of Middleton’s labor broke around 1:00 AM Monday morning, meaning the Duchess was in labor for approximately 14 hours.

The months leading up to the birth of the royal baby sparked a media frenzy. The press certainly had a field day speculating about names and reporting on Middleton’s hospital stint in December for hyperemesis gravidarum. And then there were all of the concerns that the pregnant Duchess was much too thin for her condition.

In July, hordes of journalists and photographers were stationed outside St. Mary’s Hospital, where Middleton gave birth in the private Lindo Wing (it’s also where baby daddy Prince William was born back in 1982).
