2010 Fall TV Preview – Oldies but Goodies

THE OFFICE
SEASON PREMIERE SEPTEMBER 23
Steve Carell, everyone! This will be our seventh season with him, and most unfortunately…our last. Now that last season was virtually dedicated to Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam (Jenna Fischer) getting married and having a baby, hopefully we’ll get to see more of Michael Scott. We’re sure to miss him when he’s off inadvertently railroading some other company into the ground, and it’d be great if the producers undertstood we’re looking to spend the next few months overdosing on him, and not so much on the littlest Halpert.

SONS OF ANARCHY
SEASON PREMIERE SEPTEMBER 7
Charming, California’s Redwood Original Chapter motorcycle club is about to return for its third season, as are their families and rivals. You’ll recall the show mainly follows the club’s activities and rivals who threaten to expose (or are in great support of) both their illegal and legal activities. It’s reported to revolve around SAMCRO’s roots, and creator Kurt Stutter says he’s going to “take the sons into a world that is outside their own, where they don’t have control, where they are subject to other people’s laws and beliefs and parameters, where they aren’t quite the big fish in the small pond.” Hal Holbrook has signed on to do a four-episode arch, and Stephen King has also landed a role, too.

HOUSE
SEASON PREMIERE SEPTEMBER 21
The most watched television program in 2008 will enter its seventh season on Fox in September, and its main item of business is following up with House (Hugh Laurie) and Cuddy’s (Lisa Edelstein) kiss. Producer Katie Jacobs says it wasn’t a hallucination, and the things that kept them apart for so many years are exactly what will make their relationship a dynamic one. She’s said the consequences “can be severe,” but who knows if the relationship we’ve waited so long to develop will be what we wanted it to.

30 ROCK
SEASON PREMIERE SEPTEMBER 23
Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) and her gaggle of writers are set to premiere their fifth season on September 23rd, and it’s also known that the October 14th episode will be filmed and broadcasted live, twice (for both the West and East coasts). Last season was filled with excellent guest stars, and it’s been revealed that Matt Damon will continue to embody his role as Carol the pilot. Has Liz’s last minute declaration of a relationship with Carol outlasted Jack’s (Alec Baldwin) relationship with a pregnant Avery (Elizabeth Banks)? And will Kenneth (Jack McBrayer) be able to get his job in NYC back or did he really have to ship out to Los Angeles? That would be the greatest tragedy of all.

COMMUNITY
SEASON PREMIERE SEPTEMBER 23
Never before have any of us been willing to trade in our Ivy League educations for a degree from Greendale Community College! Even though the show was snubbed from this year’s Emmys, it in no way has strayed from our hearts, and we’re particularly excited for the second season. We’re all anxious to see if Jeff’s (Joel McHale) kiss with Annie (Alison Brie) has developed into something more serious, or if he’s (yet again) ruled it as something that goes against the reputation he built during his first year of school.

BIG BANG THEORY
SEASON PREMIERE SEPTEMBER 23
The fourth season of two genius astrophysicists living across the hall from a pretty waitress will premiere on September 23rd, and people will be paying special attention to Jim Parsons, who just won an Emmy for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series for his role of Sheldon Cooper, the theoretical physicist. The third season capped off with Raj (Kunal Nayyar) and Howard (Simon Helberg) signing Sheldon up for online dating, at which point he met Mayim Bialik. Leonard (Johnny Galecki) slept with Penny (Kaley Cuoco), but was extremely hurt to learn she regretted her actions. At Comic-Con this past July, writer Lee Aronsohn revealed Bialik would be back for the fourth season, and he suggested Leonard and Penny’s relationship would continue to progress…which is better than what any of us could have hoped for.

RULES OF ENGAGEMENT
SEASON PREMIERE SEPTEMBER 20
Though it debuted as a midseason replacement in 2007, Rules of Engagement has become one of the go-to shows about relationships and dating. David Spade embodies the perpetually single Russell, while his friends (played by Patrick Warburton, Megyn Price, Oliver Hudson, Bianca Kajlich, and Adhir Kalyan) battle the complications of committed partnerships. It remains to be seen if Spade’s character will meet a lady and bring her into the group, but we can surely expect to see more of the humor and frustration that populates married and engaged life in the fifth season.

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER
SEASON PREMIERE SEPTEMBER 20
The sixth season of HIMYM begins on September 20th, and the question on everyone’s mind is if this is the season where Ted (Josh Radnor) will finally meet Cindy’s (Rachel Bilson) roommate, who was revealed last season to be “the mother.” Rachel Bilson is set to return this season, so all signs point to YES that this will be the season where things seriously advance on behalf of Ted…but also on behalf of Lily (Alyson Hannigan) and Marshall (Jason Segel), who decided they were ready to have a baby. Executive producer Carter Bays has said this season will “be more like the first two seasons in terms of storytelling and would feature more ‘game-changing’ elements to the plot, starting with the first episode.”

MODERN FAMILY
SEASON PREMIERE SEPTEMBER 22
Fresh off an Emmy win for Outstanding Comedy Series, Modern Family is going to seem a lot more alluring to the people who managed to miss its premiere season. Though it’s hard to pinpoint general and recurring themes and plotlines in a season of this show, the familial ties that exist between all the characters (including Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Ed O’Neill, Sophia Vergara, Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson) make it a non-issue. On the last episode of last season, we saw Gloria kiss Phil on the Kiss Cam at a Laker’s game, so the first episode of this season is sure to start on a high note. Also, Nathan lane will make an appearance, which seems long overdue.

CHUCK
SEASON PREMIERE SEPTEMBER 20
despite almost not being renewed for a fourth season by NBC, chuck finally got the green light and filmed thirteen episodes that will begin airing on September 20th. At Comic-Con, we learned Linda Hamilton will play Chuck’s mother, and that the main arc of the season will be Chuck’s search for her…as will the fact he’ll be continuing his life as a spy, even though he told his sister, Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) he’d give it up. He’ll also continue to battle Daniel Shaw (Brandon Routh), in addition to figuring out what to do with his persistent feelings for Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski).

BROTHERS AND SISTERS
SEASON PREMIERE SEPTEMBER 26
And last but not least, Brothers and Sisters comes back for its fifth season this fall, too! The show has garnered numerous awards for its actors, including a Golden Globe for Rachel Giffiths, Calista Flockhart, continue to arise over the family business, in addition to the expected stuff that takes place between five siblings and a mother. Last season, Justin’s (Dave Annable) relationship with Rebecca (Emily VanCamp) proved to be quite the tumultuous one, and Sarah’s (Griffiths) love for Luc didn’t seem to be able to thrive outside of France. We have yet to see what will become of Ryan’s decision to befriend a rival of his father…but it’s surely not going to go down too positively with the rest of his siblings and perhaps we’ll get a taste of that in the upcoming season.
