2010 Fall TV Preview – The Departed

SMALLVILLE

SO LONG, SUPERMAN

Ten years is a long time. Smallville, by making it this long, you’ve joined the likes of Friends, M.A.S.H., and even Cheers! Whoa! Now that’s some pretty quality company. And for that length we applaud you. Beyond that, somehow, you made Superman cool for folks outside the nerd-spectrum, and more specifically — women. Granted, casting a hunk like Tom Welling as Clark Kent definitely didn’t hurt your ratings with the ladies, but at the same time, you weren’t afraid to explore the classic comic book ideas of arch-enemies, super powers, and aliens. There was a balance between the nerdiness and the hunkiness. We aren’t sure how you did it, and at times there’s no doubt that both sides wanted more, but overall, you did a fine job of capturing the growth and development of Superman. And for 10 years!

LAW & ORDER

CASE CLOSED

Wow. 20 seasons. 20 seasons. We know you ended this past summer, but we couldn’t wave goodbye to TV this fall without saying a word to you. In television, you opened the idea of a crime forensics show. Without you, we might not have CSI or Bones or any other great crime drama today. But beyond TV, you’ve affected the daily lives of people every day. Look at the advertisements on the internet, on the subway, or on billboards. “Come learn how to do forensic science! Start your career in law enforcement now!” You were such an inspiring show that people not only want to watch you, but become you. 20 years is impressive, but constantly providing new and interesting content during that time frame, while managing to inspire people, that’s astonishing. The release date for Law & Order’s final season DVD is not yet known.

THE TUDORS

THE REIGN IS OVER

One of the most difficult challenges in creating television is creating realism. Yeah, sitcoms like The Big Bang Theory or How I Met Your Mother can put stereotypical characters in funny situations to make us all laugh, but typically, that’s only on the surface level. Few shows are able to create depth within themselves to help us feel the same emotions that the characters are. So, when a show like The Tudors succeeds at breaking through this difficult wall — we must recognize it.

Granted, The Tudors isn’t completely historically accurate, but despite those adjustments, the series did a terrific job capturing the feeling and aesthetic of royalty. It may have felt like a soap opera at times, but isn’t that how we imagine the royal families lived? After all, they had tons of money, and a lot of free time — wouldn’t you be looking for a little drama yourself? Much credit goes to Jonathan Rhys Meyers in his role as Henry VIII by creating this identifiable atmospheric feeling. The season finale of The Tudors aired on June 21. The DVD of the last season releases on October 12.

MICHAEL SCOTT

SAYANORA, MR. SCOTT

Oh Michael Scott, thank you. Your awkwardness, complete lack of awareness, and general failure at life has made Thursday nights special for the past seven years. We can’t do anything but smile at the memories of you hating Toby, declaring bankruptcy, or calling one of the many, many pointless meetings in the conference room. Thank you for living such a hilarious life. We know it hurts to get dumped by women, get peanut butter in your hair, or even burn your foot on a George Forman grill, but if there’s anything you can take solace in — it’s that we laughed, hard.

Although being excruciatingly bad at dealing with people, you do somehow come off as innocent and lovable. We hope, despite all your trouble in the past, that you find someone this season. Hopefully it’s someone who understands how your brain works and gets your terrible sense of humor. You definitely have plenty of faults, but we find them hilarious and they are the reason that we are pulling for you. We’ll keep the faith. You will find someone to share the condo with.

Michael Scott’s final season in The Office kicks off at 9 p.m. EST / 8 p.m. CST on September 23.
