Mr. Robot star Rami Malek’s mum had a favourite going in to the Golden Globes on Sunday (10Jan16) – her son’s Best Actor competitor, Jon Hamm.
Malek was nominated for his first Golden Globe for Best Actor – Television Series Drama for his work on the acclaimed show, putting him up against the likes of Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan), Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), Wagner Moura (Narcos), and Hamm, who was the favourite going into the ceremony for his portrayal of Don Draper in the final season of Mad Men.
Among those rooting for Hamm was an unlikely fan in Malek’s mother, whose main goal as her son’s ‘date’ was to meet her favourite actor.
“All she wanted to do was meet Jon Hamm,” Malek told U.S. talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. “She was like, ‘We need to meet him right now.’ I’m like, ‘You understand that’s my competition tonight, right? We’re both up for best actor.’ And she’s like, ‘It doesn’t matter.’
“And then we were sitting down and his name got called and he won and she said, ‘He deserved it.'”
Malek assured that his mother’s comments were more to “protect” her son from getting too disappointed, and he added, “Jon’s such a cool guy. He was so much fun and he is so deserving.”
Malek, who was able to take a photo with his mum and Hamm, didn’t go home empty-handed – the series won the award for Best Television Series – Drama.
