The 34-year-old actress transformed herself for the hit Netflix series, which follows a women’s professional wrestling in the circuit in the 1980s.

“It’s not just, ‘Oh, we got in amazing shape for this show, so I feel great.’ It was more about learning to use our bodies in this totally different way,” she told The Edit. “It really changed the way I felt about my body. It felt so empowering and exciting, and it proved that we were capable of so much more than we expected. GLOW is such a body-positive show; all of the women on it feel really comfortable in their bodies, and that is such a healthy thing to be surrounded by.”

Over time the former Mad Men star has noticed that the guys she works with are a lot more self-conscious and wary of what they eat and their bodies than women. And she insists that she and her female co-stars, including Kate Nash and Betty Gilpin, in GLOW only discuss their frames in regards to learning moves or workouts they carry out in order to pull off the wrestling.

The brunette beauty jumped at the chance bulk up and get fit for the show, especially because she was keen to take on a role that required her to dramatically change her appearance.

“I’d really been wanting to do something where I looked totally different, because I felt like in all the roles I’d done in the past, I’d always looked the same,” she said. “Nobody would ever let me cut my hair. Every job that I’d get, I’d be like, ‘Maybe she has a short, blonde bob?’ And they’d say, ‘What? No! You’re gonna look how you look, that’s why we cast you to do the part.'”
