The American Cinematographer magazine list is the follow-up to one the publication did over a decade ago to seek out the most beautiful movie of 1894 to 1997.
Amelie’s cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel is thrilled with the new honour, telling the magazine, “This is a real honour for me, especially considering the other movies in this list. These are some of the finest cinematographers, and I’m not sure I deserve to be among them, but I am very happy to be. They are all explorers.”
More than 17,000 film fans participated in the poll. Delbonnel’s camerawork beat Emmanuel Lubezki’s in Children of Men and Janusz Kaminski’s for Saving Private Ryan.
Robert Elswit (There Will Be Blood) and Roger Deakins (No Country for Old Men) round out the top five.
Deakins, an eight-time Oscars nominee since 1995, had a total of four films in the publication’s top 50 poll – he also landed on the list for his work in the films The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, O Brother, Where Art Thou? and The Man Who Wasn’t There.
