Angelina Jolie Used ‘By the Sea’ to ‘Communicate’ with Brad Pitt

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s 2015 film By The Sea marked the beginning of the end of their marriage.

In the film, which Jolie also directed, the former couple played a husband and wife who were experiencing difficulties in their marriage because of miscarriages and intimacy issues.

Angelina and Brad shot the movie while they were on their honeymoon in Malta, and she previously insisted the experience made them closer. But now she admits the “heavy” film exposed a few cracks in their relationship.

“We had met working together and we worked together well,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast. “I wanted us to do some serious work together, I thought it would be a good way for us to communicate.

“In some ways it was, and in some ways we learned some things. But there was a heaviness probably during that situation that carried on, and it wasn’t because of the film.”

During her new interview, the actress questioned why she wrote and directed a movie that dealt with such heavy issues.

“It was something that we were dealing (with)… things happen for different reasons, and things – why did I write that exact piece? Why did we feel that way when we made it? I’m not sure,” she says. “A piece of art can be something that’s healing or something that’s difficult.

“I’m glad we did that film, because we did explore something together. Whatever it was maybe it didn’t solve certain things, but we did communicate something that needed to be communicated to each other.”

Angelina filed for divorce from Brad in September, 2016.
