Ariel Winter: ‘My large breasts were affecting me psychologically’

Actress Ariel Winter discovered big physical benefits to undergoing a breast reduction, but explains she ultimately made the decision because she was suffering psychologically.
The Modern Family star underwent the corrective surgery in 2015 after spending years struggling with chronic pain and Winter recently admitted the operation to reduce her chest size has given her a big confidence boost, and now she is opening up about how the procedure helped her to feel happy again.
“People may find it hard to believe, but when I got my breast-reduction surgery last year, it wasn’t because of the mean comments online,” she writes on website Motto. “It wasn’t because I didn’t like how I looked.
“Having so much weight on my frame was affecting me psychologically. I was uncomfortable and unhappy. I chose surgery because of how I felt, not because of what anyone else thought.”
“Afterward, I automatically felt so much happier and just better physically,” she continues. “My back and shoulders didn’t hurt anymore!”
And the first thing Ariel did when she was back on her feet was hit the stores, so she could make a start on a whole new wardrobe.
“I was so excited to be able to find things that fit properly, instead of hiding in a baggy sweater,” she adds. “That meant the world to me.”
The 18-year-old felt disparaged by comments made about the way she dressed before the surgery, but she was grateful for the support she received after the procedure.
“I think it will be the only (cosmetic surgery) I’ll have done, but I’m extremely happy with the decision I made,” she told People magazine. “It’s important to talk about it because there are young girls suffering like I did. There shouldn’t be a stigma about it.”
