Backstage Quotes at the 2005 Teen Choice Awards

Hollywood.com was there when all the tongues were wagging backstage at the 2005 Teen Choice Awards. Some highlights:

Ryan Gosling
On the secret of the success of “The Notebook.”
“There hadn’t been a film like that in a little while. The interesting thing about doing this film was I think our initial feeling was that this is a fairy tale–it doesn’t happen. But what’s so interesting for me is that when the film came out people were always coming up to us telling us, “Oh that’s my uncle’s story” or “That’s my grandparent’s story.” Apparently this happens, so I think more and more people are relating to it.”

Amanda Bynes
On what she’s learned from walking in a guy’s shoes for her new film:
“I think one of the greatest lessons I’ve learnt is from doing [‘She’s The Man’] was from one of the soccer players who, because I was back and forth from being a guy to a girl every day, was like, ‘I like you a lot better as a guy.’ I was like, ‘Okay.’ And he’s like, ‘No, it’s just that you talk to me more when you’re a guy.’ And I thought it was so strange, because when I’m a girl I’m probably just withdrawn or kind of nervous because I have a pimple or something, but to everyone else it seems like I’m too cool or whatever. But when I’m a guy it’s sort of like I could care less, because at that point you can’t really have an ego. And so, it just really taught me that everyone wants to be treated equally and normally and be real. You don’t have to look good all the time.”

Nick Cannon
On what he knows now that he wishes he knew when he was 13:
“I wish I knew that relationships and being a genuine people person means a lot in life, in the industry, in business, in everything. Because when you can really relate to people and be real with people and really give people a piece of yourself it goes a long way. People appreciate when you’re real. People appreciate when you remember their name and their faces. That just helps in life. I wish I could have known that when I was 13, because I could’ve gotten along with all my teachers if I was really genuine with them.”

Rachel McAdams
On what she plans to do with her surfboard-shaped Teen Choice Award:
“Take it out on the ocean. I’d like to try. It looks a bit slick for the water, a bit lacquered.”

Jon Heder
On his advice to teenagers:
“Don’t be afraid to be shy, and don’t be afraid to break out.”

Wilmer Valderrama
On the rumors he’s heard about his castmates and why they’re not true:
“I think I’ve heard them all. Okay, there was this rumor where they said Ashton [Kutcher] and I had this feud where we weren’t getting along on the set. And that was super silly because the cast of That ’70s Show, I can honestly say, cannot be more tight and more family oriented. And I could sit here and excuse my language, bulls**t you guys all day long and say, ‘Oh my god, we’re such a family. We kiss each other every morning.’And the truth is that we are and that’s why the show has been so successful for us, because the chemistry is amazing, we love each other, and I could not be more proud to be part of such an amazing team.”

Lauren Graham
On winning an award for playing a mom when she’s still yet to have kids herself:
“Clearly by the time I have kids, there won’t even be television. It’ll be a while…And I feel bad because [Lorelai] is an impossibly cool mom. And so many mothers or daughters say, ‘We’re just like you.’ And I’m like, ‘Wow! What a great life you must have. Cupcakes for breakfast?'”
