Band Disbands (About Five Years Too Late)

Boy, if this were 1994, this story would be huge. As it is, it’s 2000, so whatever. The Smashing Pumpkins will disband at the end of the year, frontman Billy Corgan announced on a Los Angeles radio station this afternoon.

The Smashing Pumpkins used to be a really cool alternative rock band back when people cared and/or listened to really cool alternative rock. (See: The Age Before Britney/Backstreet.)

The New York publicity office for the Pumpkins confirmed to Hollywood.com Corgan’s statement to KROQ-FM, but didn’t have any details on the whys or hows.

The Pumpkins are currently in the midst of a tour — a tour which hits Los Angeles tonight. Corgan says the Pumpkins will complete their scheduled dates. The band is on the road to promote its new, underwhelming (sales-wise) album “Machina: The Machines of God.”

The group’s hits include “Today” (as in, “Today is the greatest …”) from the 1993 collection “Siamese Dream.”
