Character bio: Zellweger plays Bridget, a 32-year-old “singleton” who decides it’s time to take control of her life and start keeping a diary. Turning a page on a whole new life, she finds herself caught between two men–a man who’s too good to be true, and a man who’s so wrong, he could just be right.

Oscar odds: Although Zellweger gained all that weight and got the accent right for her role as Bridget Jones, it’s doubtful she’ll win this category, especially considering she’s up against Sissy Spacek for In the Bedroom. — Guylaine Cadorette
