Character Bio: Alda plays villains just as neurotically pleasant as he plays good guys. In The Aviator, the actor tackles the real-life role of Sen. Owen Brewster, a corrupt politician who tried to bring down Howard Hughes’ thriving aviation business through a congressional investigation in the 1940s. Alda tells Entertainment Weekly that to play Brewster–whom the actor claims was “the ugliest man I’ve ever seen”– he took the ugliness inside the senator and concentrated on that. It works.
