Character bio: Streep’s Susan Orlean is a successful author who hooks up with a brilliant, but hopelessly skanky, fanatical orchid thief, the subject of her latest work. Her best-selling novel, “The Orchid Thief,” is being adapted by a big movie studio. Streep is spellbinding in her absolute conviction, navigating her way through the most ludicrous and entertaining scenarios without ever doubting her character’s motivations. We see the buttoned-down, married Orlean coming undone, as she metaphorically transforms into the stunning flower that has become the very root of her obsession. She inhabits a space of vulnerability, beautifully realized with flawless comedic timing. With Streep, all is organic, yet nothing is predictable.
