R&B singer India.Arie may have been snubbed at the Grammys in February, but she finally got her just desserts.
Arie was named best female R&B artist at the 2nd Annual BET Awards held Tuesday night at Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre. The event, organized by cable channel Black Entertainment Television, was hosted by comedians Steve Harvey and Cedric the Entertainer to recognize people of color in music, film, television and sports.
Arie, however, still had to contend with Alicia Keys, who took home the best new artist prize.
Other music winners included Usher for best male R&B artist, Ja Rule for best male hip-hop artist, Missy Elliott for best female hip-hop artist and Yolanda Adams for best gospel artist.
Best video honors went to rapper Busta Rhymes for the single “Pass the Courvoisier, Part II,” featuring P. Diddy and Pharrell.
Halle Berry, who won the Best Actress Oscar for her role in Monster’s Ball earlier this year, won the award for best actress. Ali star Will Smith walked away with the best actor award.
Boxer Muhammad Ali was honored with a humanitarian award, and the rock-soul group Earth, Wind & Fire received a lifetime achievement award.
The BET Awards are determined by votes from record-label executives, media and fans.
