Since most of the major characters in the Hellraiser series have no skin, there’s a lot of, um, bloody exposure built in. Add to that all the Cenobites ripping people apart with hooks, including Pinhead — whose particular cutting style earns a spot on this list.

Director Sam Raimi has lots of fun beating his friend Bruce Campbell to a bloody pulp. People don’t just get killed in this movie, they are bloody messes, spraying red corn syrup and green blood, in the case of dispatched demons. With a child-like anarchy, Raimi throws biology out the window and just sprays the blood liberally.

Even though the Saw filmmakers want to build tension with tricky editing and artistic lighting, they still understand the thrill of blood. Plenty of it. Those limb-ripping traps are real, especially in IV with all those heads being crushed by ice blocks, scalps peeling off and victims ripped limb from limb. Yummy!

With all of Freddy Kreuger’s kills, his first Nightmare remains the bloodiest for sheer quantity. Poor Tina gets dragged up the walls and onto the ceiling by Freddy’s invisible claws as her skin slices open, drenching her in red. Then Nancy’s boyfriend (Johnny Depp!) gets sucked into his bed, and a fountain of blood spews out.

Seems director Rob Zombie has some serious issues to work out — which he does, in spades, with Corpses. Cannibalism, torture, satanic rituals, that’s all in a day’s fun with the psychotic family Zombie dreams up to kill unsuspecting teens lost in the woods. Oh yeah, there’s enough blood to fill a cathedral.

Blood splatter on snow makes for a pretty horrifying picture, no? This vampire romp takes the whole blood-sucking motif to a new level. The evil ones attack an frozen Alaskan town plunged into 30 days of darkness with a bloody ferocity usually not seen in this horror genre. The really gory part? The vampires never clean up after they drink, walking around with blood all over their clothes and faces. Use a towelette once in a while.

Starship Troopers isn’t just about big, scary alien bugs skewering people. It is a metaphor for social issues such as warmongering propaganda. Yeah, yeah, what we like about the movie is the young innocent cadets getting cut in half by bugs. As violence for the sake of violence goes, Troopers may not be a “horror” film per se, but it’s a true gore fest.
