Bonham Carter’s cousin relives horrific crash for inquest

Bonham Carter’s family members were on a safari holiday in the country when a minibus they were travelling in spun out of control and flipped over after a tyre burst.

The actress’ cousin Fiona Bonham Carter, 51, escaped with a broken shoulder. But Fiona’s son Marcus Egerton-Warburton, 14, her mother Brenda, 74, her stepfather Francis Kirkwood, 75, and sister-in-law, Kay Boardman, 54, all died.

Graham Bonham Carter, who was married to Kay, found his relatives lying dead on the savannah after they were thrown from their Volkswagen Kombi – and on Tuesday (09Nov10) he relived the ordeal, telling Westminster Coroner’s Court how he collected his wife’s belongings as he waited for cops to arrive at the bloody scene.

He recalled, “I didn’t scream, I didn’t shout, I didn’t collapse, I didn’t cry – I gathered myself together. I remember saying to the police, ‘I don’t want to see my wife or mother again, but could you please take off their jewellery?’

“I remember collecting their handbags, which was a funny sort of thing. I kept them with me all the way to the police station. I was the last person to leave the scene, there was a little bit of contemplation just sitting there, surrounded by carnage.”

Recording verdicts of accidental death, coroner Dr. Paul Knapman called the accident an “appalling tragedy”.

Alice in Wonderland star Bonham Carter pulled out of filming Terminator Salvation to fly back to Britain to be with relatives after learning of the crash.
