Brie Larson had ‘creative control’ over Captain Marvel make-up

Brie Larson had “creative control” over her character Captain Marvel’s make-up in Avengers: Endgame.

Fans are getting hyped for the release of Avengers: Endgame, which is due to hit cinemas later this month (Apr19), with trailers adding to the anticipation for the movie.

One trailer gave Marvel devotees their first glimpse at Brie’s Captain Marvel in Endgame, and while many revealed they were more than a little excited about the film, others wondered why Captain Marvel was wearing so much more make-up than in her own movie, released earlier this year.

Now, Endgame co-director Joe Russo has opened up about the controversy, explaining that the decision for Captain Marvel, aka Carol Danvers, to don smoky eyes and dark lipstick was entirely down to Brie, as she has a say in the appearance of her alter ego.

“We empower them to have control over their characters because they need to be comfortable playing those characters,” he told io9. “This was Brie’s first time playing the character ever. First day on set as the character ever. And those are the choices that she and her make-up team made.

“I think as it approached the (solo Captain Marvel film, when) she started to think more about the character, she made other creative choices. But everyone should be given the right to have the freedom to make whatever creative choices they want to make. And those are the ones that she made that day with us.”

Brie previously revealed that Endgame holds a special place in her heart because she shot it before Captain Marvel – meaning it was the first time she had taken on the superhero role.

“(Endgame) will always be personally dear to me because it was my first time playing Captain Marvel,” she said at a recent press conference. “We shot this first, so I had to stumble and figure out who this character was with no script for this and no script for Captain Marvel, and perform for the first time in front of legends.”
