Brit Marling rejected Goldman Sachs job for Hollywood

The rising star had been studying economics at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. when she decided to reject a job offer from Goldman Sachs bosses and turn her back on a promising future in finance.

She has since landed a role as Richard Gere’s daughter in thrilling new drama Arbitrage, but she admits her parents weren’t initially impressed to hear about her big film plans.

Marling says, “When I made that phone call to my parents, it was like, ‘I’m dropping out of school and I’m not gonna take the Goldman job and I’m moving (to Los Angeles) to make movies and I’m thinking of becoming an actress.’ There was a silence that was deafening on the other side.”
