The luxury brand’s Twitter representative wanted to congratulate Lion star Dev for his Best Supporting Actor win at the London ceremony, while also highlighting the custom tuxedo he had worn to accept the prize, but accidentally included a photo of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’s Riz instead.
“Celebrating the #EEBAFTAs in London this evening, Best Actor in a Supporting Role winner #DevPatel wears a @Burberry custom made navy tuxedo”, read the post.
The message was promptly deleted, but fans had already started to share screen shots of the blunder online as they mocked the case of mistaken identity between the two Anglo-Asian stars.
“When Burberry can’t tell the difference between two brown actors,” wrote one critic, as another sarcastically tweeted, “B**ody loved Dev Patel in #TheNightOf and also loved @rizmc in #Slumdogmillionaire. Both amazing Sri Lankan actors. @Burberry”.
Slumdog Millionaire star Dev is of Indian descent, while The Night Of actor Riz is of Pakistani origin.
The Burberry Twitter rep subsequently corrected the mistake, sharing the right photo of Dev alongside the reposted original note, and added a separate tweet about Riz’s “grey mohair tuxedo”, which brand officials had also provided for the Royal Albert Hall event.
A Burberry spokesperson has since acknowledged the mix-up in a statement issued to The Fader on Monday (13Feb17).
“We apologize unreservedly for the incorrectly titled pictures of Dev Patel and Riz Ahmed posted late last night,” it reads. “This was a mistake that should not have happened and was corrected immediately.
“We have apologised directly to Dev and Riz. We are checking our processes to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”
The actors themselves have yet to comment on the gaffe.
