Carla Bruni pretended to be polyamorous as a feminist statement

Carla Bruni has admitted she pretended to be polyamorous when she was younger to ‘be free from society’s judgement.’
The 50 year-old singer-songwriter is married to former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, with whom she has daughter Giulia, 6. She also has a 16-year-old son Aurelien from her previous marriage to radio host Raphael Enthoven. Although the musician has been happily married for 10 years, she has previously voiced her support for non-monogamy and shared that she identified as polyamorous in her younger years. However, Carla has now confessed that she was rebelling against what she believed was society’s unfair judgement of women.
“It’s always the same story: when a man has a lot of girlfriends, he’s a fantastic playboy, and when a girl has a lot of boyfriends, they say she’s not a good girl,” the former model said in an interview with Vanity Fair. “As a woman, I hated that point of view. So I thought it would be so cool and pretend that I was free from society’s judgement and blah blah blah.”
The Quelqu’un m’a dit (Someone Told Me) singer insisted that she “wasn’t joking – I was just young.” And after having flings with high profile musicians such as Eric Clapton and Mick Jagger, she confessed that her attempts at rebellion ended when she began a relationship with Nicolas.
“The truth is, as soon as I met my man, I thought I could escape that and be free. But as soon as I met my man, I became like all women, being faithful and jealous,” Carla laughed. “I became completely common. That’s how love is—it makes you average, doesn’t it? I think that he changed my mind.”
Carla released her album French Touch last year (17), which featured a series of covers of renowned English-language songs and marked her first studio album launch since 2013. Carla will showcase her music in a performance at New York’s Town Hall on Friday (16Feb18).
