Cartoon museum remains open for now

According to The Associated Press, the International Museum of Cartoon Art will remain open for the time being thanks to a loan from its founder. Mort Walker averted foreclosure by loaning the museum $200,000 towards its mortgage. Walker is the creator of the comic strip Beetle Bailey. The museum remains in debt, however, and still needs money to pay an additional $600,000 payment it owes to SunTrust Bank, which owns the museum’s mortgage. Without a sale or large donation, the museum will likely be forced to close its doors by the end of August. The museum tried to sell a set of 1928 Mickey Mouse pencil sketches valued at over $3 million in order to pay off its debt, but the drawings were not sold at the auction.
