The wide receiver – formerly known as Chad Ochocinco – was detained by police in Miami, Florida on Saturday night (11Aug12) after an argument with his wife Evelyn Lozada, who he married on 4 July (12), allegedly turned violent.
Lozada claims the sportsman headbutted her and was treated at a local hospital for a cut to her forehead, while Johnson spent the night at Broward County Jail waiting to appear in front of a judge.
He is facing a misdemeanour charge of simple domestic battery, but was released from jail on Sunday (12Aug12) after posting $2,500 (£1,562) bail.
Bosses at his club have now decided to axe him from the team.
A post on the Miami Dolphins’ official Twitter.com page, as well as their website, reads, “The Miami Dolphins have terminated the contract of WR (wide receiver) Chad Johnson.”
