The Richard Gere and Winona Ryder starrer “Autumn in New York” is getting a cool forecast. MGM announced over the weekend that “Autumn,” which opens Friday and is directed by Joan Chen, will not be screened for critics. Such a move is generally indicative of a film turkey, but Gere, 51, and Ryder, 28, are upset about the move.
“Winona and I are very proud of this film and disagree with the decision not to preview it,” Gere told USA Today.
Winona Ryder Ryder’s publicist, Mara Buxbaum, told USA Today, “Winona is very proud of this film. I don’t understand this decision, and I hope they change their minds.”
MGM has not made a statement about the decision, but Gere says that the studio might want to keep some of the movie’s plot points under wraps for as long as possible.
“Autumn,” a romantic weeper about an aging playboy who falls in love with a much younger woman, is the first major feature from actress turned director Chen, who debuted on the independent circuit last year with “Xiu Xiu: the Sent Down Girl.”
