Coppola fails to reinstate “Pinocchio” award

The California Supreme Court in San Francisco has denied film legend Francis Ford Coppola‘s petition to review a lower court’s reversal of an $80 million damage award, Reuters reports.

In 1998, the Academy Award-winning Coppola originally won a judgment against Warner Bros. for falsely claiming to have a deal with the director, which impeded his attempt to bring a live action version of Pinocchio to Columbia Pictures after the project floundered at Warner Bros.

At that point a Los Angeles Superior Court jury awarded Coppola $80 million: $60 million in punitive compensation and $20 million in compensatory remuneration. However, the trial judge threw out the punitive award, and in March the California Court of Appeals wiped out the compensatory award.

The California Supreme Court’s denial means the appellate court’s ruling stands and Coppola will receive no money from Warner Bros.

There was no comment from Coppola or his representatives.
