Creed and Straight Outta Compton are big winners at Russell Simmons’ new awards show

Creed and Straight Outta Compton won the big prizes at the inaugural All Def Movie Awards, Russell Simmons’ alternative to the Oscars.
The Def Jam label founder created the ceremony to honour films and actors who have been unrecognised at the Academy Awards, which was been criticised for its lack of diversity after black or minority actors were missing from the 2016 nominations.
Tony Rock, the brother of upcoming Oscars host Chris Rock, hosted the first ever All Def Movie Awards on Wednesday night (24Feb16) at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, just days before the Academy Awards, which will be held yards away at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday (28Feb16).
N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton beat competition from Beasts of No Nation, Chi-raq, Concussion, Creed, and Dope to be voted Best Picture by fans online. The prize was accepted by rapper Ice Cube and his son O’Shea Jackson, Jr., who portrayed him in the movie.
Creed was a double winner, with Michael B. Jordan taking home the Best Actor trophy and Ryan Coogler being named Best Director. Best Actress was awarded to Sanaa Lathan for The Perfect Guy.
The awards also feature categories which parody the lack of diversity in movies. Christoph Waltz was named Best Helpful White Person and model Amber Rose was presented with the Most Likely to Steal Your Girl Award.
Ice Cube won two more prizes for films he starred in the 1990s. He was presented with the Best Black Survivor in a Movie for 1997 thriller Anaconda, and accepted the Most Quoted Movie award for his 1995 comedy Friday.
Denzel Washington scored the Best Bad Muh F**ka Award, Norman Lear was honoured with the Vanguard Award, and Tyrese Gibson presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Will Smith, who will not be attending the Oscars on Sunday to make a statement against the diversity issue.
The All Def Movie Awards will be broadcast in the U.S. at the same time as the Academy Awards on Sunday.
