Demi Lovato was the person Americans searched for most on Google in 2018.
The Cool for the Summer singer, 26, was rushed to hospital in Los Angeles in July (18) after relapsing and suffering a suspected opioid overdose. Searches of her name spiked that month, according to data released by the tech giant on Wednesday (12Dec18).
Interest in her remained high in August as she entered rehab to begin her recovery. She has since entered into a relationship with fashion designer Henry Levy – who is reportedly helping her to maintain her sobriety. Residents of her home state, New Mexico, were most likely to look her up on Google.
Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, who topped the equivalent list in her adopted British homeland, was second in the year she married U.K. royal Prince Harry. Third was U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh – whose nomination to America’s highest court was almost derailed by sexual assault allegations.
Other stars who featured in the top ten included Khloe Kardashian in fifth, Eminem in sixth, eighth place Ariana Grande, as well as Rick Ross and Cardi B, who filled out the final two spots.
Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody was the most searched for song of 2018 – boosted by the release of a biopic of the same name.
On a sadder note, the most searched for celebrity death of the year was the rapper Mac Miller’s. He passed away from a drug overdose at the age of 26 in September (18). Fashion designer Kate Spade was the second most searched for following her death.
Black Panther was Google’s most popular movie of the year in the U.S., with Roseanne, which was cancelled after its star Roseanne Barr made racially insensitive comments on Twitter, the most searched for TV show.
