Derek Hough will be Singin’ in the Rain on Broadway

Dancing With the Stars professional Derek Hough has been cast to take on Gene Kelly’s role in the Broadway production of Singin’ in the Rain.
Harvey Weinstein is teaming with producers at Theatre du Chatelet to bring a stage adaptation of the beloved musical to the New York Stage, and on Saturday (27Feb16), Weinstein announced Hough had been cast as Don Lockwood.
During the Weinstein Company’s annual pre-Oscar dinner at the Montage in Beverly Hills, Hough proved his worth by performing two songs from the production, including the titular track.
The stage show will be based on the 1952 movie, starring Kelly and Debbie Reynolds, and it will be directed by Robert Carsen, who enjoyed success behind the scenes with My Fair Lady in 2010 and 2013 at the French production house.
Rumours surrounding Hough’s casting began last year (15) after he performed Singin’ In the Rain for Weinstein’s New York Spring Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall.
The play originally ran on Broadway in 1985 and a sold-out Paris production was launched in 2014. It returned to the theatre in November (15) and ran until January (16).
The news comes a month after Hough’s sister Julianne earned rave reviews for her role as Sandy Young in TV special Grease: Live.
