DiCaprio boosts tiger campaign

The Titanic star announced in May (10) he has pledged his support to the World Wildlife Fund’s Save Tigers Now initiative, which aims to raise $20 million (£13 million) to help double the number of the species by 2022.

And he has now boosted the campaign’s profile by meeting with India’s Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh at a Coalition of Rainforest Nations event in New York on Friday (25Sep10).

An Indian government official tells AFP, “The actor met the minister and has expressed his interest to play a crucial role in sensitising the global community to the cause of the Indian tiger. DiCaprio plans to come to India to be a part of the conservation efforts.”

DiCaprio is not the only star backing the campaign – earlier this year (10) Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan called for more work to preserve India’s dwindling tiger population.
