Changeling
(Friday, Oct. 24, 2008)
If you eschew bubblegum-pop fare like High School Musical 3: Senior Year and prefer to sniffle your way down a cinematic black hole, Changeling is what your Friday night’s been looking for. Clint Eastwood’s at the helm, and Angelina Jolie stars as a young mother whose son goes missing. Jolie, whom Oscar pundits have pinned a premature nomination, plays out the agony nicely (the nightmarish idea that the child could be Maddox, Pax or Knox might have helped her method acting). Weeks later, her son is returned, but Jolie’s thrill is surpassed by a kind of witch vibe: “That’s not my child,” she insists. Naturally, it’s based on the god-awful true story of the 1920s Wineville Chicken Coop Murders — a man that molested, tortured, killed and dismembered 20 or so young boys.
