David Archuleta, David Archuleta
(Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008)
He claims that he doesn’t “get” girls yet, but Archuleta, 17, can sing the heck out of a song about hand-holding (cue the millions of swooning girls). And, smart move: He’s not singing to a specific “she;” instead, he’s singing to YOU. Refer to his first single, “Crush,” which went No. 1 on iTunes in just 24 hours (“ … YOU got me hypnotized, so mesmerized, I just got to know … ”). Despite the heavy-hitter ballads last season’s runner-up darling wooed American Idol with, Archuleta is a self-described “pop kid.” While it’s unintelligible to compare his upbeat, happy-to-be-happy songs to the angst-ridden rock noise that the other David perfects (the album of Idol winner David Cook releases next week), the compare/contrast lists can’t help but exist. But Archuleta, who co-wrote five of the album’s songs, has managed to create a new genre: boy band minus the band.
