Defiance
(Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008)
It’s fitting that yet another Holocaust movie is debuting on the very last day of 2008, a year that produced more Holocaust movies than ever (i.e. The Reader, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Valkyrie, Good …). Defiance, however, is likely to be the best of the batch. Enter Daniel Craig in the most un-007 role ever. Set in World War II, he is one of three Jewish brothers (with Liev Schreiber and Jamie Bell) who escape Nazi-ruled Poland to team up with the Russians to save the lives of 1,200 Jews in the forests of Belarus. It’s based on a true story, naturally. With a tagline like “from desperation comes defiance,” director Ed Zwick, who last helmed the Oscar-nominated Blood Diamond, seems to be angling for another Academy wink. So far, Craig’s getting all the attention — and it’s well deserved.
