Fall Out Boy, Folie a Deux
(Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008)
Bronx Mowgli Wentz comes second today; Daddy Pete unveils a new baby, an album (with three other papas who may or may not wear eyeliner) that’s, thankfully, more power-pop than emo-punk. Frontman Patrick Stump is convinced that the record is “hell, yes … political,” but these loaded messages take a backseat to songs that handle topics like marriage to one Ashlee Simpson (that one’s called “Does Your Husband Know?” and it marries massive drums, a four-horn section and a sensitive piano line very impressively). The men of Fall Out Boy have carefully checked off all things required to produce a booming hit of a CD (the title translates as “a madness shared by two”): brilliant radio fodder (“Disloyal Order of Water Buffaloes”), anthems to fill gigantic concert venues (“America’s Suitehearts”), and playful ballads that skew Elton John-y (“What a Catch, Donnie;” backup vocals by Elvis Costello).
