Marvel’s X-Men: Volume 1 and 2 DVDs
(Tuesday, Apr. 28, 2009)
Comic-book reading is overrated. Comic-book watching — as in on DVD — is where it’s at (laziness has nothing to do with it). Available on two-disc sets today are volumes 1 and 2 of Marvel’s celebrated 1990s comic, X-Men. Volume 1 has Wolverine on its cover, and it details the origins of our beloved mutants under the leadership of Professor Xavier plus the gnarly villains who aim to be as combative as possible (ahem, Magneto). “Night of the Sentinels” is the most notable tale on this disc, and “The Phoenix Saga” is the five-part gem on volume 2 — the not-so-trustworthy siren-head looks particularly becoming on it’s fiery cover. Featuring 32 episodes in total, get back to X-Men’s roots and meet the lesser-mutants like Jubilee, the confused teenager with the ability to shoot plasma from her fingertips; the Beast, the supersmart, super-agile fella covered in blue fur; diabolical villains like Mr. Sinister and Omega; plus, Gambit the Cajun thief, who makes his big-screen debut (played by Friday Night Lights‘ Taylor Kitsch) in this weekend’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
