State of Play
(Friday, Apr. 17, 2009)
Zac Efron (17 Again)? Jason Statham (Crank 2: High Voltage)? No. All the Oscar winners are in another movie this weekend: State of Play. A lengthy-coiffed Russell Crowe plays a dying kind — a newspaper journalist — and Helen Mirren is his atypical cougar-in-a-great-way editor. Crowe is investigating the mysterious death of a flowering Congressional aide that was assisting (and sleeping with) a renegade Congressman — that would be Ben Affleck — with something major. But, thanks to the indiscretion and his a-hole gall to cheat on the always dependable Robin Wright Penn, the media simply wants to focus on the bedding, not the “murder” or the clandestine/incriminating work done in between. In between uncovering evidence and glorifying old-school journalism, Crowe finds a PYT of new generation — a blogger! — to hook up with (Rachel McAdams — get her thoughts on how it felt to be among the three Oscar-winning powerhouses). It’s one of those movies that maintains an invested level of suspense, and you’re just rooting for the truth to reveal itself — if it’s allowed.
