Dustin Lance Black: ‘Sam Smith and my fiance are friends’

Dustin Lance Black insists he was joking when he warned Sam Smith to stop texting his fiance Tom Daley, as the Brits are friends.
The Milk screenwriter hit headlines when he pointed out to the British singer that he was not the first openly gay person to win an Oscar, by writing on Twitter.com, “Hey @SamSmithWorld, if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiance.”
Dustin also shared a link to footage of him winning Best Original Screenplay for Milk in 2009, years before Sam picked up his Best Original Song prize on Sunday (28Feb16) and proclaimed in his acceptance speech that he was the first openly gay winner of an Academy Award.
Dustin has now come forward to clarify his tweet and insist there is nothing going on between Sam and Tom, his Olympic diver fiance. He claims they are good friends, which is why he was confused by Sam not remembering his Oscar win.
Dustin later wrote, “Well this has proven to be a lively day on Twitter. From humour to anger. The former my intent… in defense of history. Much love to all… Dear Internet: @TomDaley1994 and @samsmithworld are pals. They text. Thus my surprise Sam took me for a closet case! Feel free to laugh.”
Sam has since apologised for his speech on Twitter.com, writing, “Second openly gay man to win an oscar or third or fourth or 100th, It wasn’t my point… My point was to shine some light on the LGBT community who i love so dearly… Apologies for the mix up @DLanceBlack I’ll be sure to check out your films now x Belated Congrats on the Oscar.”
Dustin replied, posting, “Congratulations. Drink water. Rest. But do check out some of the other Gay Oscar work out there. Some truly wonderful stuff.”
