Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham to get their own Fast & Furious spin-off

Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham are reportedly set to star in their own Fast & Furious spin-off movie.

The duo are said to be in talks to reunite with screenwriter Chris Morgan, who wrote The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast Five, Fast & Furious 6, Furious 7 and the latest installment in the action thriller saga, The Fate of the Furious.

The spin-off will take place while Universal works on ideas for the ninth movie in the franchise, according to Deadline.

Johnson’s character, U.S. Diplomatic Security Agent Luke Hobbs, will team up with Statham’s terrorist-turned-vigilante Deckard Shaw as they are forced to trust one another when they’re targeted by the same enemy, the outlet reports.

Charlize Theron’s Cipher is rumored to also be joining the project, with the addition of the Oscar-winning actress only recently considered by Universal after audiences reacted well to her villainous character, according to Variety.

The 44-year-old former wrestler first let slip that a spin-off movie featuring his character was in the works during an interview earlier this month (Apr17). “Right now, I shared with the studio, let’s deliver 8 and hopefully have the world enjoy 8,” Johnson told MTV News. “Then we can come back to the table and talk about what a spin-off looks like because it is the studio’s intention to do that.

“I’m not one to say, ‘Great! We’re gonna make 9 and 10 and 22 and then 109’. I’m one to do just one at a time, so we’ll see,” he added.

The Fate of the Furious racked up $529 million in global ticket sales in the first weekend of its release on 12 April (17).
